Toddler Activities

Having some great toddler activities ready can be a life-saver especially on a rainy day.

Toddlers are full of energy but most of the time have only got a short attention span, so we are aiming to provide some ideas that are quick and easy to follow and don't need too much preparation time - actually a lot of the time your toddler should be able to help you set it all up!

Butterfly made with coffee filter and washable markers

Time needed:

15-20 minutes (plus drying time)

What you need:

  • washable markers
  • coffee filter
  • water
  • spray bottle
  • card
  • glue
  • black felt-tip pen

1. Cut the coffee filter in half so that it resembles wings.

2. Let your child doodle and draw on the filter.

3. Spray water on so that the colours start to run into each other.

4. Once dry, glue on the body of the butterfly.

Tissue Paper Collage

Time needed:

10 minutes

What you need:

  • differently coloured tissue paper
  • aluminium foil
  • petroleum jelly

1. Prepare a piece of aluminium foil about the size of A4.

2. Cover it with petroleum jelly.

3. Give the tissue paper to your child and encourage him/her to rip it into several pieces - the size and shape doesn't matter at all.

4. Show your child how to stick it onto the covered aluminium foil - it also comes off easily again!

Done!

I did this activity with my 2 year old son and he just loved it! I hope you will enjoy it, too!

Flower decorated with Tissue Paper Balls

This is also another one of our toddler activities that will let you use the unused tissue paper of another previous project - our Tissue Paper Collage!

Time needed:

20-30 minutes

What you need:

  • red card
  • yellow card
  • tissue paper in various colours
  • glue
  • pencil
  • scissors

1. Cut a flower out of the red and yellow card.

2. Show your toddler how to make little balls out of tissue paper pieces - if you have some left-overs from our Tissue Paper collage, you could use those!

3. Cover the yellow circle with glue.

4. Show your toddler how to glue on the little tissue paper balls.

Heart Art

This lovely heart makes a wonderful Valentine's Day or Mother's Day card. It's easy to make and all you need is paper and paint! Enjoy!

Time needed:

10-15 minutes

What you need:

  • red and white acrylic paint
  • white card
  • red and white corrugated card or simple red card
  • paint brush
  • scissors
  • glue

1. Cut a heart shape out of the white card. Fold it in half and unfold it again.

2. Get the white and read paint ready for your toddler and give him/her the paint brush. Apply a generous amount of paint.

3. Fold the heart in half again and press down - be careful as some of the paint might come out on the sides depending on how much you put on. Unfold it again.

4. As one heart is quite quickly made, why not make a few and see how every heart changes and looks different!

5. Now you can glue them onto card or corrugated card or simply write your message onto the back of the heart!

Heart Art 2 - Sponge Printing

Sponge printing is one of my favourite toddler activities. It's a great way to create some lovely hearts by applying paint with sponges. The results will be quite unpredictable but that just adds more fun to it!

Time needed:

10-15 minutes

What you need:

  • sponges
  • acrylic paint
  • white card
  • scissors
  • card to make the greeting cards
  • glue

1. Cut out some heart shapes out of the white card.

2. Cut the sponge into several pieces and get the colours ready.

3. Dab the colour onto the card with the help of the sponges to create the hearts.

4. Arrange them as you like to make your greeting cards or write a message onto the back of the heart.

3. Stick the egg shape onto the sticky backed paper.

4. Show your toddler how stick the tissue paper onto the egg.

What I love about this idea is that it is one of only a handful of toddler activities that are absolutely mess free. No sticky fingers, no worries about stains - just a lot of fun!
